Map, Navigation and Compass Training

Learn to map read and navigate in the British countryside

Beginners courses in the South East of England for individuals, families, small groups, youth groups, schools, DofE Centres, walking groups, ramblers. In fact anyone who wants to be able to read a map, use a compass, and find their way.

A firm grasp of map reading and compass work can be taught on this one day course. You will leave with the confidence to explore the local countryside knowing where you are and how to find your way to your intended destination.

Although we are all becoming accustomed to navigating using mobile phones, these devices have their limitations, they stop working and become useless when wet, the battery runs out, or when there is no signal, making traditional, map and compass, navigation skills essential.

Learning to use a map and compass is a necessary skill for when the tech lets you down. With these skills, you can navigate confidently without relying on electronic devices. This one-day course sets out to teach absolute beginners the fundamentals of navigating in the open countryside using a map and compass.

If you need to learn, improve, refresh or develop any aspect of your navigation or map reading skills then we can plan a day out to take you to the next level.

Advanced navigation on upland terrain

By upland we are referring to walking in remote areas over 600 meters above sea level. Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands all present mountains with significant navigational challenges. The highest mountains in the British Isles are well over 1000 meters high.

It is a serious undertaking to venture into this terrain, particularly if you want to walk away from the main tourist paths. You need to know how to navigate and choose the right route for you and the people with you. You need to be prepared for changing weather conditions. You need to know what equipment to carry for your planned day. You need to know when to stop your journey and come off the mountains before you get into difficulty.

This advanced course covers all the topics relating to travel on high ground. Subject to your requirements we can cover navigation in any National Park and prepare you for poor weather conditions, including navigation in poor visibility or even getting off remote hills and back to safety in the dark.

A two-day course, to cover all the topics, running into the night on the first day, if you wish, is operated on a ratio of one instructor to three trainees. Ideal for those candidates preparing themselves for the Mountain Leader Award.

Training run by ML and WML qualified staff, ensures a comprehensive learning experience in challenging terrain conditions.

Advances courses are by arrangement, as we need to build the day around your skill development. A price will be agreed depending on course content, numbers and location. Local accommodation can be arranged.

Please contact us to discuss or feel free to phone for an extended chat about what you want to get out of the course.
